6x + 3 - 1/2 x = -2x +5

First, group the x values together (on one side) and the other values on the other.

  6x + 3 - 1/2 x = -2x +5
6x - 1/2 x + 2x = 5 - 3

Now solve!

     7 and 1/2 x = 2
                      x = 8
