here let mary age be x and fred be y

1st equation

x= 5y

2nd equation

x+3 =4(y+3)

now from 1st equation putting value of x in equation 2

x+3 = 4y+12

5y+3 = 4y +12

y = 9

so fred is 9 and mary is 45
