during the enlightenment period, the ideals such as liberty, freedom, equality and free will came into light. moreover, several revolutions were inspired by the liberty and won, such as the american revolution and the french revolution.

This gave these ideals "life" and convinced people that these ideals can actually be achieved and sustained.
