There are seven major (bigger) tectonic plates: African Plate, North American Plate, Pacific Plate, Eurasian Plate, Antarctic Plate, Indo-Australian Plate, South American Plate
There are also 10 minor plate such as the Nazca Plate and the Scotia Plate - so a total of 17 plates.
